The Riad

Dar D’Art, located a few kilometres away from Essaouira, is taking you in with its charm and radiance.

The sand-coloured villa, nestled among the argan trees in the heart of the Berber countryside, greets its guests in search of relaxation, joy and calm.

The house is situated in the middle of a landscaped, decorated estate that stretches over one hectare. The vast pool runs alongside the house in the shade of the palm trees.

And finally, the house. With a Moorish hacienda looking, and with a surface area of sq.m.600, it consists of seven comfortable, exquisite, bright bedrooms. All have been carefully named according to the charm of the place.

Around the shaded patio, you relax in an art gallery atmosphere.

The colourful decoration mixes ancient artefacts, Moroccan-style paintings and designer furniture brought back from various travels.

At Dar D’Art, everything contributes to a gentle way of life and relaxation, from the terraces to the pool.

A restful stop, coupled with a magnificent table d’hôte, where you savour a delightful Moroccan and Mediterranean cooking prepared by Nadia, our cordon-bleu cook.

Hesperis (Garden-Pool-Terrace)

As a reference to this lilac-pink flower from Mogador which gives off a strong jasmine scent.

You enter the estate through a large, green area planted with fig and olive trees. You glance around for the Dar D’Art. Finally it stands out at the end of a long path encircled with bougainvillea clusters and rosebush edges.

The first encounter is thus made with the garden where it is pleasant to go for a stroll.

And naturally, the garden offers a vast pool (m20x6) at the feet of the palm trees. The water lies over an emerald-green ceramic background which mirrors the villa’s walls, decorated with stylized, ethnic patterns.

Around the pool, you can find sparkling, colourful sofas that invite you to take a nap, and a bar to have an aperitif before diving.

And to crown it all, there is an agreeable, sunny terrace as an extension of the patio towards the outside, where it is pleasant to have breakfast while enjoying the view of the pool.

This space, where deckchairs are arranged, invites you to rest while the singing of the birds is lulling you.

It is ideal as well to organise open-air parties at night, unless you decide to go for a wild night to Essaouira until dawn…

K.384 (Terrace upstairs)

As a reference to Selim Bassa Pacha from “The Abduction from the Seraglio” opera by the divine Mozart.

On the right, at the threshold of Dar D’Art, you need to go up the stairs from the patio to reach the terrace which offers a fantastic, wide view onto the argan tree forest.

This terrace communicates with four bedrooms – L’Avventura, La Belle Poule, Bilitis, and Tombouctou – and constitutes alone an open-air living space dedicated to sunbathing, reading, music listening, and endless conversations with friends.

Take a nap in the sofas which have been laid in a riot of colours, conveying a lascivious, oriental atmosphere that is favourable to relaxation and lazily stretching under the sun. It is perfect as well to have a drink at night under the starry vault.

Other parts of the house are made for farniente, such as the sofas laid under the wattle roof, an ideal place to rest in the shade.

Come and live like a pasha in Essaouira’s countryside!

Des Esseintes (lounge/dining room)

“For the assertion of artifice against nature, of the delights of art against life.”

As a reference to the dandy character from Against Nature by Joris-Karl Huysmans who stayed in Mogador in 1901.

After crossing the patio, you enter the villa in a vast lounge open to the kitchen.

On the ground floor, this spacious room with its ochre red tadelakt walls is used as a lounge and dining room.

Around the fireplace, a convivial sofa has been laid in round, where cushions covered with warm, richly coloured fabric are mixed up together.

An ideal, cosy place to take refuge at night when you come back exhausted from a horse or a quad ride. There you enjoy the soft warmth of the fire while dining or watching a movie.

Sparkling paintings by Essaouira’s artists decorate the walls; handicrafts and African statues inhabit this room and complete the contemporary decoration.

Maldoror (patio/gallery)

As a reference to the Gothic prose poem by Isidore Ducase, Count of Lautréamont.

Upon crossing the villa’s threshold, you enter an open patio planted with orange trees where delicious scents greet you and a wave of colours envelops you.
The silhouettes of the statues of Essaouira’s artists are standing out, a supernatural bestiary like poetic figures walking in procession.

On the ground floor, the arches all around the patio hide three bedrooms: Béloukia, Artemisia and Monsieur le Consul.

The lounge backs onto the patio as well, a crossing and meeting point where you gather to have breakfast.

You can stroll around the patio under the row of arches of the gallery, decorated with African statues and colourful, Moroccan-style paintings. Several areas have been fit out to rest, flip through a book, have an aperitif or listen to music, with a view to the pool and the garden.
